Carol Laverne Alongis, a resident of Gadsden County, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2020, in Tallahassee, Florida. She was born on August 27, 1937, in Sycamore, Florida to Clyde and Inez Bentley. Carol lived in Gadsden County for most of her life. She retired after 35 years of dedicated service to the State of Florida working in Food Service at Florida State Hospital. Carol met and married the love of her life, Johnny Alongis and together raised four children–John, Donna, JoAnn and Dianne. Carol was a kind, generous person who loved cooking for family and having gatherings for family fellowship. She also enjoyed reading and playing a hand or two of cards. She loved her friends and family, but most of all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carol always enjoyed a gospel sing whether it was all weekend on the Suwannee River or the “all night” sing in Bonifay. She was a woman of faith and member of Sycamore United Methodist Church who lived life serving others. Carol was an inspiration to all who knew her, and she will be missed greatly.

Carol is survived by one son, John Alongis (Tammy); three daughters, Donna Maria Alderman (Ron), JoAnn Spears (Kenny), and Dianne Alongis (Dan); one sister, Lucille Newsome; eight grandchildren, Amanda, Ashley, Matt, Basia, Lydia, Kenny, Jr., Kristen and Aidan; as well as eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Johnny Alongis; a brother, David Bentley and two sisters, Pat Reeves and Betty Porter.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Big Bend Hospice and a special thank you to a very special caregiver, her niece, Tammy Porter for their loving care and support during such a difficult time.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial donations be made in Ms. Carol’s name to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.

A graveside service will be held at Sycamore Cemetery on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at 10:30 AM Eastern Time with Rev. Jim Lemieux officiating and McAlpin Funeral Home directing.
