Wilma Jean Capps Black, age 74, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at Bonifay Nursing and Rehab Center.

Wilma was born November 16, 1949 in Lompoc, California and was the daughter of the late James Benjamin Capps and Edith Olean Turner Capps. Wilma graduated from Malone High School in 1967 and received her Bachelors of Science in Business Administration from Shorter College in 2001. She enjoyed a forty-plus year career as a Laboratory Technologist, having worked in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, New Mexico and Maryland, and was a long standing member of the Medical Laboratory Professionals and American Medical Technologists. She retired from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 2014 and returned to Jackson County to be near her children and grandchildren.

Wilma had a life-long passion for reading, which led her to work after retirement at the Jackson County Public Library in Marianna. She was also a life-long learner, passionate about researching her rich, family geneology, loved solving crossword and logic puzzles, traveling with her daughter and spending time with her family and her beloved pets. Lastly, Wilma loved to sing and was an excellent alto. Her love of singing was passed on to her children and music comforted her in her final hours.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Franklin Black and her parents, James and Olean Capps.

Wilma is survived by her two children, Chip Baxter (Sheri) of Marianna, and Jennifer Baxter of Alford; two brothers, David Capps and Cliff Capps (LeeAnn); sister, Darlene Capps Hicks; grandchildren, Cody Ryan Baxter (Carylee), Morgan Leigh Baxter and Mia Naomi Baxter, her four-legged grandpuppy; two great grandchildren, Landon Reece Baxter and Charlotte Sienna Baxter; and host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.
