Cities and towns gear up for city elections Tuesday

    Kim Applewhite gave the City Commission an update on the upcoming election process in the first virtual meeting held due to COVID-19 restrictions.
    Applewhite said, “I have spoken with the State Elections Office twice last Friday and again today. We have spoken several times. Applewhite said mail-in ballots have been distributed for those who choose to vote by mail but the polls will be open at City Hall from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Applewhite said every precaution has been put in place in light of COVID-19. Voters will enter one at a time and after each voter leaves, the area, including the writing utensil will be disinfected.
    There are about 950 registered voters in District 2 which is the district where there is an election. Incumbent John Roberts is seeking re-election and is being challenged by new-to-the-political scene, Isaiah Long.
    Grand Ridge has three council seats and the office of the mayor up for elections this year. In council seat two, Kenneth Stephens is challenging Melvin Chris Wright, Jr. Seat two has no incumbent. Council member Richard Gable resigned that seat to take over the mayor’s seat when Wayne Edenfield resigned. Council member seat three has Tracy Hagan challenging incumbent Thomas Peaden vying for that seat. Council seat four pits Kimberly Johnson Applewhite against Ashley Gilley. The mayor’s slot is being sought by Rhul Edenfield and Richard C. Gable.
    The town of Sneads has two council seats up for election this year. Town council group one is being sought by incumbent Tim Arnold and George Alexander while group two has incumbent Daryl Johnson, Sr. and Donovan Weeks.
    The City of Graceville has two city commission seats available. City commission group two is being sought by incumbent Walter L. Olds and Velma Wright. City commission group four has three vying for that seat. Samantha Reed Angerbrandt, Marshall Davis and incumbent Walter Douglas, Jr.
