The Town of Greenwood is just north of Marianna and a few miles south of Malone with all three connected by a common highway, State Highway 71. Greenwood was established in 1824 and incorporated in 1827.
Greenwood is home to numerous antebellum homes including the Great Oaks that is now owned by Jackson County’s Tourist Development Council. It is also home to the Hayes Long mansion located on Highway 71 as you leave Greenwood. It is now owned by Philip and Ashley Garrett where they reside with their two daughters. One of the oldest operating stores in Florida is Pender Store, located on Highway 71. It was built in the years after the Civil War.
The town started their bicentennial celebration March 12 with the planting of a tree. They planted an Indian Summer Red Maple tree.
As plans are announced for additional celebrations, the Times will keep our readers informed.
