After a two-year fight against cancer, Mrs. Susan McKinnon of St. Augustine, FL passed away peacefully at the Bailey Center for Caring on May 4, 2021. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to so many, Susan was born in Marianna, FL on September 27, 1946. She attended the University of Florida and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Special Education and Elementary Education. She also met and married the love of her life, Dan McKinnon, at UF and the two made Gainesville, FL their home for the next 40 years. Susan spent 43 years as a teacher in the Alachua County School District, spending the majority of that time teaching special needs students at Sidney Lanier.
Following the untimely death of her husband Dan, Susan moved to St. Augustine in 2011 to live closer to family. She was a devoted grandmother (“Gran-Sus”) to her three granddaughters here—Alex, Emma and Lucy—dispensing wisdom and love in equal parts. She also formed many new friendships in her new hometown while continuing to nurture lifelong ones as well. She was an avid traveler including mission trips to Guatemala. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the family cabin in North Carolina and condo in Mexico Beach. She was a faithful member of Trinity Methodist Church in Gainesville and then First United Methodist Church in St. Augustine. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Haven Hospice Thrift Shop and St. Francis House.
Susan is survived by her son Daniel Alexander (Lex) McKinnon, Jr. of Titusville, FL; daughter Heather and son-in-law Dan Mowrey of St. Augustine; granddaughters Alex, Emma, and Lucy Mowrey of St. Augustine; brother Rayburn Joyner and sister-in-law Elizabeth; sister-in-law Serena McKinnon Weeks along with many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Susan will live on in the wonderful memories she made with everyone she knew.
