Our family is sad to announce the passing of Annie Katherine “Kat” Cheek of Malone, FL. She died at the age of 89 years old on July 28, 2023. Kat passed away at her home while surrounded by her family and friends after a battle with Dementia.

Kat was born on December 16, 1933 to William Angus and Nettie Cobb Porter in Marianna, FL. She worked at Sunland Training Center and later retired from there. After retiring, she enjoyed Folly Beach in South Carolina, working in her yard and fishing with her sister. She most enjoyed her children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews visiting her. She also enjoyed eating lunch with her friends at Malone Pharmacy every day.

Kat was preceded in death by her parents, William Angus and Nettie Cobb Porter; her husband, Anthony “Buddy” Cheek; her daughter, Deborah Spires Christensen; grandson, Charles “Chucky” Spires, Jr. and two sons-in-law, Charles Spires, Sr. and Herman Murders.

She is survived by her daughters, Denise Curry of Basehor, Kansas and Kathy Dawn Murders of Harlem, GA; her sister, Angenette Jordan of Malone, FL; granddaughters, Dana Spires of Summerville, SC, Denise “DeeDee” Bolton (Donnie) of Mobile, AL, Tanya Hogan (Robert) of Dallas, GA, and Chenoa Vanbeber (James) of Basehor, KS; grandsons, Josh Denton (Dominique) of Harlem, GA, Robert Curry (Olga) of Summerville, SC, Zachary Curry of Summerville, SC; 14 great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly and a special friend, Helen Adkins.

Kat is remembered for having a great sense of humor, but also being generous, loyal and brave. She was strong-willed and had an enormous heart. We are happy that she is well again and free from pain. We will always love and miss you until we meet again. Our family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Bonifay Nursing and Rehab staff and Emerald Coast Hospice.

A Memorial Service will be 2 P.M. Tuesday, August 1, 2023 at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with Reverend Ed Ham officiating.

The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 1 P.M. until the time of service at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.
