Garey A. Jackson, 84, of Marianna, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2024, surrounded by his family. Loved by many, Garey was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother.
Garey was born October 17, 1939 in Marianna, Florida to the late Pearl Daniels Jackson and Murray H. Jackson. He was one of eleven siblings, which was the beginning of his great love of family. He took up working at an early age, purchasing a tool each time he had a spare dime. He worked his way up over the years until he became a business owner and operator of his own service stations, the first one in 1963, with the most well-known being Jackson’s Gulf, which later became Jackson’s BP. He was a long standing member of the Elks Lodge as well as the Chipola Appreciation Club. Garey retired in 2009, which afforded him more time to enjoy Chipola Basketball games with his best friend, Bobby “Roundman” Sims, and also to do what he loved the most, which was spending time with family. He loved gathering family for a meal as well as filling his afternoons and evenings cheering on the grandchildren/great-grandchildren at sporting events. He was a father figure to many and believed in giving people second chances and helping those in need.
Garey was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Dolores Horne, Annette Roberts and Daisy Barrentine, and brothers Bobby Jackson and Murray “Junior” Jackson.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Julie S. Jackson, daughters, Kelly VanHuss (Mike) and Shannon Stewart (Bobby), and son, Rory Jackson (Kim), all of Marianna; grandchildren, Megan Stewart Milton (Clay), Ren Stewart (Megan), Tucker Jackson, Quaid VanHuss (Morgan), Brolin VanHuss and Nevin VanHuss, Jessica Lawson, Chase Matthews (Ashton) and Brady Matthews; great grandchildren, Graham, Aidan and Everly Milton, Renleigh Peyton and Kane Stewart, and Whitley Matthews; sisters Sara Medlock, Marge Nolin, Grace Bennett and Patricia Edwards (Bill) and brother, Billy Jackson (Helen), as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; best friend, Bobby Sims, and caretaker Lynn Jordan, who quickly became part of the family, and his canine companion, Bella.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 P.M. on Friday, February 23, 2024 at James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 P.M. with Rev. Jack Hollis officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with James and Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chipola Appreciation Club, Chipola College, 3094 Indian Circle, Marianna, FL 32446, or Partners for Pets, 4011 Maintenance Drive, Marianna, FL 32448.
