Rebecca “Becky” Handel Player, affectionately known as Becky, was born on November 23, 1948, in El Dorado, Illinois. She peacefully passed from this life on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 in Dothan, AL.

Becky’s early education began at Leon High School where she graduated in 1966. This marked the beginning of her lifelong passion for education, as she enrolled into North Florida Community College for her early college years. She later graduated from the University of West Florida, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree. Her passion for education did not stop there, and she later graduated from Troy University with a Master’s in Education.

Becky’s professional life was as fulfilling as her academic one. She dedicated 38 years of her life to the Jackson County School Board, marking an indelible impact on countless young lives. A large portion of her career was spent at Grand Ridge School, shaping the minds of the upcoming generation. In her final years, she served at Golson Elementary School.

Becky was a woman of many interests outside her professional realm. She had a knack for crafting and loved the joy of creating something new. Traveling was another one of her favorite pastimes. She found immense pleasure in going on cruises and spending time at the beach. However, nothing could match the joy she derived from spending quality time with her grandchildren, whom she adored beyond measure.

The words that best describe Becky are loving, kind, and passionate. She wore her heart on her sleeve, and her kindness radiated to all those around her. She was passionate about her work, her hobbies, and most importantly, her family. These qualities were shown because of her love for Christ. Becky was a devout Christian and was a member of Providence Baptist Church for 20 years.

Becky was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Betty Handel.

Becky is survived by her son, Jay Player and wife, Christina of Grand Ridge; daughter, Codi Hatfield and husband, Daryl of Panama City; cherished grandchildren, Aidan and Hunter Player, Lily and June Hatfield; along with a host of cousins.

Funeral services will be 10 A.M. Saturday, October 14, 2023 at Providence Baptist Church with Pastor Charles Kleiser officiating. Interment will follow in Cypress Cemetery with Marianna Chapel Funeral Home directing.

The family will receive friends for a time of visitation, beginning at 9 A.M. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grand Ridge School (6925 Florida St. Grand Ridge, FL 32442) to purchase books for the library.
