Mrs. Rebecca Hayes Anderson, of Greenwood, Alabama, departed this life on Monday, February 19, 2024, at her residence with her loving son, Dexter, and her family by her side.
She was born on September 19, 1941. She was the firstborn child of the late Samuel Lee Hayes, Sr., and the late Ollie V. Hayes. She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and joined McChapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Marianna, Florida.
Rebecca loved the African Methodist Episcopal Church and her McChapel Church Family. She served as a member of the Senior Choir, the president of the Pulpit Aide, the president of the Laymen Organization, and the president of the Senior Usher Board which she served faithfully. She also was a Steward as well as a Trustee.
Rebecca attended Union Grove High School and was employed by the State of Florida and retired after 35 years of service.
During her spare time, she loved gardening, creating floral arrangements, baking, and sewing. She was a shining light to her family, church community, and friends. She adored her children and was the matriarch of her family.
She was preceded in death by two sons: MSgt. (Ret.) Michael Anderson, and David Anderson, Jr., three sisters: Emma Pearl Penny, Edna Mae Hayes, and Dorothy (Elijah) Gilbert: two brothers: Milton Charles Hayes and SPC (Ret.) Andrew “Tight” Hayes, one brother-in-law: Samuel Lee Heyward.
Rebecca leaves to cherish her memory: a loving and devoted son, Dexter Anderson, Greenwood, Florida; one daughter-in-law: Linda Anderson, Montgomery, Alabama; two sisters: Mamie Hayes, Marianna, Florida, and Leola Hayes Heyward, Tallahassee, Florida; three brothers: Samuel Lee (Shirley) Hayes, Panama City, Florida, Larry (Brenda) Smith, Tallahassee, Florida, and Sonny (Alegria) Williams, Tuscan, AZ; one sister-in-law: Suk Hayes, Radcliff, Kentucky; four grandchildren: Tiara Anderson, LeAndre Anderson, Jamaal Anderson, and Genesis Anderson; one great-grandchild: Nylah Anderson; god-son: Milton Franklin; a very special caregiver: Michelle Hogans, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Public visitation will be 3-6 PM, Friday, February 23, 2024, in the M. Sue and Rodney D. Pittman Memorial Chapel, 5441 Cooper Street, Graceville, Florida.
A celebration of life will commence at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 24, 2024 from the sanctuary of the McChapel AME Church, 4963 Old US Road, Marianna, Florida Bishop Frank M. Reid, III, Presiding Prelate, Eleventh Episcopal District, The Reverend Dr. Tan C. Moss, Presiding Elder, Miraculous Marianna District and The Reverend Christopher T. Jordan, Pastor-Officiant
Mrs. Anderson will be laid to rest in the church cemetery under the directions of Christian Memorial Chapel of Graceville, Florida.
