Harry Eugene Goodwin, a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2023, surrounded by his precious family in Panama City, Florida. Born on November 30, 1950, in Donalsonville, Georgia, Harry’s life was one of unwavering courage and love.

Harry was a proud 1969 graduate of Sneads High School. His roots were planted deeply in Jackson County, where he would become a well-respected lifelong resident. Harry’s work ethic was as strong as his commitment to family; he served the State of Florida with distinction for over twenty-two years, retiring as a Correctional Officer Sergeant from Calhoun Correctional Facility in 2013. Even as he dedicated himself to his career, Harry’s true calling was at home, raising his three children as a devoted single parent. His unwavering spirit saw him contributing extra care to his family through his part-time work at Advance Auto Parts.

Harry’s love for life was evident to all who knew him. An avid fan of Florida State Football, he could always be found cheering on his beloved Seminoles with passion and pride. His interests extended to hands-on endeavors as he enjoyed working on vehicles; each turn of the wrench and hum of the engine was a testament to his industrious nature.

He was a loving man, known for his courageous heart and friendly demeanor. Harry’s life story cannot be told without pausing to honor the memory of those who predeceased him: his father William Howard Goodwin, mother Eulalia Williams Goodwin, sister Lovida Ann Goodwin, and son Thomas Jeremy Goodwin. Their love shaped the man Harry was, and their legacy lives on through him.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication to his soulmate and sweetheart, Mary Edwards Johnson; his son William E. Goodwin and wife Nanette of Chipley, FL; and son Johnathan S. Goodwin and wife Stacey of Kingsland, GA. His grandchildren William Allen Goodwin, Samantha Rabon Hewett, Nikolaus Edwin Rabon, Daymon James Merritt, and Layla Marie Goodwin, along with two great-granddaughters on the way, will carry his spirit forward. Harry also leaves behind cherished cousins Lovida Goodwin Roberts and Amy Hill, along with a community of friends including a special friend and neighbor Diana Rabon, as well as many extended family members.

Harry Eugene Goodwin’s legacy is one of perseverance, kindness, and an unyielding dedication to those he loved. He was indeed a great man and an even greater father. His memory will continue to guide and inspire us.

A funeral service for Harry will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 beginning at 1:00 PM Central Time in the McAlpin Funeral Home chapel.  Visitation will begin one hour prior to the funeral service.
