Gregory Dent Layton, 34, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Ashford, AL on June 26, 2024

Dent was born in Dothan, AL on March 19, 1990 to Gregory Thomas and Ashley Hall Layton. He was fortunate to enjoy much of his childhood in a country setting with his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Janice Layton, and his maternal grandparents, George and Ann Hall. Even as a little boy, Dent was energetic, funny and adventurous. He loved being outside and found much to explore. 

Dent graduated from Marianan High School in 2009 and soon became affiliated with Local Pipefitters Union #52 where he continued to work until his death. Dent took much pride in his work and accomplishments. During his school and young adult years, Dent made many good friends and with them continued to pursue his love of all things outdoors, especially hunting, fishing, searching for Indian artifacts and following the University of Alabama Crimson Tide football program. He also was enthusiastic about helping his Ma, Ann Hall, cook and preserve vegetables.  

Blessed with a winning personality, Dent drew others to him and proved to be a good friend to all. He was especially close to his cousin Luke Lien, who was always there to love and help Dent in every way possible. He and Luke remained inseparable through his entire life, Unfailingly courteous to adults, anxious to help others and loving his family, Dent was a joy who brought his best self to any situation. His death was a shock; Dent leaves many relatives and friends who will mourn him but remember him lovingly forever. 

He was preceded in death by both grandfathers, George Hall and Tom Layton. 

He is survived by his parents, Ashley and Frankie Adkins and Gregory Layton; maternal grandmother, Ann Hall “Ma”, and his paternal grandmother, Janice Layton; sisters, Taylor Toole (CJ), Caitlin Adkins (Anthony); brothers, Ridge and Dylan Layton; best friend and cousin, Luke Lien (Chelsea) and their children, Hudson and Kinley; cousins Alyssa, Priscilla, and Cecilla; great-nephew, Jackson; aunt, Ginger Howell; uncle, Cliff Hall (Demi), their children, Gail Vaughn, Michelle Malott and Carmen LaCompte; uncle, Matt Hall (Sheri) and their children, Casey Cloud and Jeri Anderson. 

Dent was well-loved and will be mourned and remembered by his many relatives, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. 

Funeral service will be 2 PM Monday, July 1, 2024 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel with Rev. Tommy Moore officiating. Burial committal service will follow in Bascom United Methodist Church Cemetery with Pastor Wendell Beall, Sr. officiating, James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel directing. 

The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Sunday, June 30, 2024 at James & Sikes Funeral Home Maddox Chapel.
