Willie James “Sonny” Hughes, age 84, of Marianna, FL, passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Signature Healthcare at the Courtyard while surrounded by his loving family.
Sonny was a devoted husband and father who Loved and served his Lord. He was completely dedicated to all of his family, from his wife and children, to his brothers and sister, his grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. He attended what was then Troy State University on a football scholarship. He was a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriffs Department for 10 years. After this, he was the Recreation Director for the City of Marianna for 27 years. During his time there, he served in various capacities with the Dixie Youth and Boys organizations. At various times he was District Director, State Director, and National Director for Dixie Boys. He served on the National Board of Directors for years even after his retirement. He was an avid FSU football fan being a season ticket holder attending as many games he and his wife could go to. He was also an avid fisherman. His favorite fishing place was Lake Talquin. For many years he would have a getaway with his sons on Lake Talquin. They would stay for several days fishing, reminiscing, having fish fries, and grilling. He looked forward to these getaways each year with great anticipation and enthusiasm. His children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, and nieces held a special place in his heart. He will be missed by many. The influence he left on so many and the community will ensure he is remembered for years to come.
Sonny was preceded in death by his loving wife, June Hughes and parents, William Odell and Sarah Peacock Hughes.
He is survived by three sons, Timmy Hughes and wife, Linda of Cottonwood, AL, Rodney Hughes and wife, Debbie of Fortson, GA, and Scotty Hughes and wife, Melissa of Marianna, FL; three brothers, Billy Hughes and wife, Emma of Dothan, AL, Bobby Hughes, Sr. of Marianna, and Dell Hughes and wife, Karen of Marianna; sister, Betty Lou Gary of Clanton, AL; grandchildren, Erica Tolin (Brad), Heather Hughes, Brandon Hughes, Ryan Hughes (Heather), Bowen Hughes (Ashley), Bailey Hughes (Zack), Hannah O’Connor (Wesley), and Zane Isler; seven great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services for Sonny will be 11 AM Tuesday, July 27, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Nathan Attwood officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with Marianna Chapel Funeral Home directing.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation one hour prior to the service in the Wesley Center, located at the First United Methodist Church.
