Gary J. McIntosh, Sr., a cherished patriarch and esteemed community member, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2023, in Marianna, Florida. Born on April 13, 1935, in Campbell, Missouri, Gary’s life was a testament to his unwavering dedication to his family and his community.
Gary’s journey began as the beloved son of Owen and Eujania McIntosh, and he grew up to be a man of integrity and kindness. His high school years at Campbell High School laid the foundation for a life of service and leadership. In 1953, Gary’s heart was captured by Barbara Sue, and together they embarked on a life filled with love and the joy of raising a family. Their union was blessed with three sons, Gary Jr. (Lauri), Greg (Tammy), and Brad Sr. (Wendy), who in turn filled their lives with laughter and the pitter-patter of little feet.
The McIntosh legacy continued to flourish with the addition of nine grandchildren: Brad Jr. (Jennifer), Meagann, Tyler (Amber), Brooke, Colton, Abigail, Rusty, Jamie, and Chris. Gary’s joy multiplied as he welcomed eight great-grandchildren, with another on the horizon. His brothers, Ronnie and Clayton McIntosh, and sisters, Janie Brinkley and Angie Anthony, along with a host of nieces and nephews, also survive him, each carrying a piece of his spirit and love.
Gary’s professional life was marked by his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to excellence. After moving to Cottondale, Florida, in 1965 and then to Sneads, Florida, in 1971, he became a respected business owner. McIntosh FORD, under his leadership from 1971 to 1979, was a cornerstone of the community. His business acumen shone brightly as he served as the Vice President of Operations and part-owner at Southeastern Fiberboard in 1980 before retiring in 1985. Even in retirement, Gary continued to contribute to the family legacy by working alongside his son at McIntosh Outboard and Joaquin Ostrich Ranch.
Gary’s love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for fishing, quail hunting, and deer hunting in his younger years. His heart, however, was always with his family, and he was known for his friendly, loving, and kind nature. He never had an enemy and was loved by all who knew him.
His commitment to his community was unwavering, as demonstrated by his involvement with the Port Authority Board, Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, and as an Auxiliary Deputy for the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Gary was also a proud member of the Elks Club, Kiwanis Club, and faithfully attended Sneads United Methodist Church.
Gary’s legacy is one of love, family, and community service. As we remember him, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man who was truly the heart of his family. Gary J. McIntosh, Sr. will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever be a beacon of warmth and kindness for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Celebration of Life service for Gary will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, beginning at 3:00 PM Central Time at Sneads First United Methodist Church with Rev. James McCrory officiating and McAlpin Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be held immediately following the service.
