Mark Skinner | TIMES - Kaitlin Land gets a save for the Cottondale Lady Hornets Thursday.

The Cottondale Lady Hornets opened their season with some pre-season action on their home court. They couldn’t have been happier after picking up a pair of wins. Cottondale took the first game 25-11 and 25-4, playing the best of three sets over Port St. Joe. In their second matchup, the Lady Hornets again took just two sets, 25-11 and 25-4 to hand Bethlehem a loss.
In the Port St. Joe game, Shyanne Bryant held serve for 14 straight points including five aces. Josie Scott had four kills while Kate Ball and Avery Roland had three kills each. Jersie McGinty was on her game with 12 assists on the evening.
Before Cottondale took the court for their second game, Bethlehem defeated Port St. Joe.
The feeling of victory for Bethlehem was short lived as Cottondale went to work early in their second game. The two wins came quickly with the second game a 25-5 shellacking of the Lady Bucks. Jersie McGinty had 14 assists, three aces, and four kills, all from the setter position. Natalie Benton had two blocks, two kills and three aces in the game. Kate Ball had hot hands on both sides of the court with five aces and four kills. Josie Scott was right with her with five kills and three blocks.
Coach Kevin Potts was a happy coach following Thursday’s games, “Overall a good season starter. Team looked in pretty good shape. Thought we played two clean sets on the night out of four. Very much looking forward to our season. Team is excited to get back in action.”
