Chief Petty Officer Roy ‘Red’ Kelton

Chief Petty Officer Roy ‘Red’ Kelton, USN (Retired), passed away at his home in Sneads, Florida on Wednesday, December 13, 2023.

Roy was born in 1935 to parents Carl and Ethel Kelton in Marion, Illinois. As one of eight children, Roy spent his childhood mostly outdoors working or playing, but always creating mischief and perfecting his fighting skills. Roy’s scrappy personality served him well when he enlisted in the United States Navy after graduating high school. Throughout his navy career, Roy was able to experience more of the world than he had imagined, made some unique memories, and won ‘most of the fights he was in’. Because of his love of hunting and fishing, Roy made Sneads home after his military service where he worked and retired from Apalachee Correctional Institution.

Throughout his life, Roy was fiercely independent and candid with his words. He loved his country, his family, especially his grandchildren, and his friends. If he counted you among his friends, you were cherished by him, even if he never expressed it.

Roy is survived by his son, Destin Kelton (Jessica) and grandchildren Payton Kelton, Marley Kelton and Ashleigh Lollie Ward (David) as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family is sincerely grateful for Roy’s close friends Curtis and Pam Locke, Todd Hall, Chuckie Wright, and Carlton Scott. He considered each of you as family.

Roy will be remembered in a memorial service at McAlpin Funeral Home in Sneads on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 4:00 PM Central Time.  Interment will follow at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Tunnel to Towers in his memory.
