Charles Emmett Gilley, 78, a lifelong resident of Grand Ridge, Florida, passed away November 2, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Charles was born March 5, 1941 in Grand Ridge, Florida; the son of Leon and Ezella McLane Gilley. He was a member of Salem Wesleyan Church. Charles was a dedicated bus driver for the Jackson County School District for over 20 years as well as a successful independent farmer for over 60 years on his own farm in Grand Ridge. He was a hard-working, kind-hearted, dedicated farmer who took pride the land he farmed and was awarded the title Champion Wheat Farmer in 1992. In his later years, Charles enjoyed word searches, watching old westerns such as “Gunsmoke”, and spending time with the family he cherished so much. He was a kind and gentle person who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Charles enjoyed life and was always there to brighten the lives of others. Charles will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
Survivors include his precious wife of 53 years, Catherin S. Gilley; three sons, Chuck Gilley and his wife Melissa, Jessie Gilley, and Marion Gilley all of Grand Ridge; four grandchildren, Jonathan Dolan, Ryan Neel, Mason Neel, and Kaylee Neel; one great grandchild, Avrick Neel; eight sisters in law; two brothers in law and a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family members.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Doris, Dorothy, Ida Belle, and Barbara, as well as, four brothers, Robert, Junior, Cecil, and Johnnie.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 beginning at 10:00 AM Central Time at McAlpin Funeral Home in Sneads, FL with Rev. Mike Hutcherson and Rev. Toby Allen officiating. Visitation for friends and family will be on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Central Time at McAlpin Funeral Home. Interment will be at Carpenter Cemetery in Grand Ridge, FL.
