The excitement is always at a higher level when you have two inner-county games, most especially in basketball. None take centerstage more so than Cottondale/Marianna, Malone/Marianna or Cottondale Malone. For some reason, those games just bring out a little more competitive edge from both teams and stats sometimes go out the window. Last week, it was Marianna coming out on top 67-41 over the visiting Hornets.
Marianna jumped on the scoreboard early with 27-first quarter points while their defense held Cottondale to 11 points. Tavis Groomes led his team with 12 points in that quarter while it was Ty’Kece Bryant led the Hornets with seven points.
In the second quarter, it was a little less offense with Marianna outscoring the visitors 14-9 to take a 41-20 lead into the locker room. In the second period, it was Ahmad Johnson with seven points leading the Bulldogs while Q. Henderson racked up six points for the Hornets.
The third quarter went to Marianna 15-9 behind the shooting of Ny’Keem Gainer, Foster Myers, and Hogan Spencer all posted four points each. Cottondale was led by Michael Clemmons with five points. The final quarter went to Cottondale, 12-11 behind the shooting of Clemmons who posted six points in the final quarter. For Marianna, it was Tavis Groomes with a three-pointer to lead his team.
Leading Cottondale on the night was Clemmons with 13 points, followed by Q. Henderson with 12 points. On board with eight points was Ty’Kece Bryant. Marianna was led by Groomes with 19 points, followed by Gainer with 12 points. Checking in with nine points each were Johnson and Myers.
