Angus Kemp Gholson III, known to his family and friends as Kemp, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2024, with his daughters at his bedside. Kemp was born on April 18, 1947, in Dothan, AL, to Angus Kemp Gholson Jr. and Eloise Eubanks Gholson.
Kemp graduated from Chattahoochee High School (CHS) in 1965, where he excelled in both basketball and golf, two sports he dearly loved. During his senior year, the CHS basketball team won the State Championship, and Kemp was voted Most Valuable Player and was a Conference Award Winner. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, he was also voted CHS Homecoming King, was a member of the C-Club, and played the trombone with the CHS band in his early years.
Kemp received an AA degree from Chipola Jr. College in Marianna, FL, and furthered his education at the UF in Gainesville and the UWF in Pensacola. Following his graduation from the UWF with a BS degree in 1970, Kemp began his career with the Florida Department of Corrections at ACI in Sneads, FL, where he worked until his retirement in 2005.
Kemp was an avid golfer throughout his life, earning golf scholarships to Chipola Jr. College, the UF, and the UWF. He won countless golf tournaments across North Florida and Georgia, leaving a legacy of sportsmanship and skill.
Kemp was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chattahoochee, FL, where he followed in his father’s footsteps by teaching Sunday school to youth groups for many years, sharing his wisdom and guiding the younger generation.
Kemp is survived by his daughters, Tara Kirk (Kip) of Warner Robins, GA, and Laura Beth Croley (Will) of Tallahassee, FL; his five grandchildren, Austin Kirk (Amiya), Elizabeth Kirk, William Kirk, Wilson Croley, and Caroline Croley; and three great-grandsons, Calloway, Kanaan, and Kylan Kirk. He is also survived by his mother, Eloise Eubanks Gholson of Chattahoochee, FL; his sister, Laura Smith (Jerry) of Alachua, FL; his nieces, May Weber (Tim) and Marjorie Drummond (Gray); the mother of his daughters, Gail Gholson; and a host of cousins and friends.
A visitation with family will be held at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Chattahoochee, FL, on Sunday, August 25th at 3:00 p.m., with a memorial service to follow at 4:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Angus Gholson Nature Park through the City of Chattahoochee, to the Angus Gholson Nature Park through the Magnolia Chapter Florida Native Plant Society, or the First United Methodist Church of Chattahoochee.
I always enjoy working with Kemp. He was in classification and I was a C O Sgt. at ACI. After retirement, we always meet each other at the post office. Kemp was a good person to know. He will be truly missed. Rest in Peace, my friend.
