What a year the Sneads Lady Pirates have had in fast-pitch softball. I say that because they went further this year than in any other year since the change from slow pitch to fast pitch. The Lady Pirates battled through to the end last week, ending the season with a 7-3 loss to Trenton but can hold their heads high with a 21-9 record for the season.
Coach Shawn Graham sent senior ace Marissa Baxter to the circle for this all-important game. Baxter went the distance, giving up just three earned runs on 11 scattered hits and two walks and struck out four batters.
Hits were scarce for the Lady Pirates with the team totaling just three on the day, while taking advantage of four walks. Sneads was three up, three down in the top of the first inning. In the second inning, Kiara Garrett led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. With one out, Taylor Lanphere kept her on-base-percentage at 1000% when she drew a walk but a pair of strikeouts left two on the bags.
The Lady Pirates had a two-out single by Michaela Edenfield but a strikeout left her on the bag at first. It was a pair of three up, three down innings in the fourth and fifth before they Lady Pirates offense came alive in the sixth. Abby Perkins led off with a double to left centerfield. Michaela Edenfield drew a walk and with one out, Kiara Garrett drew a walk to load the bases. With two outs, Taylor Lanphere completed her banner offensive showing at the state tournament with a three-RBI double. A strikeout ended the inning but Sneads had made it a 7-3 game and erased the goose egg.
In the seventh inning, the Lady Pirates were three up, three down to end their season as Florida’s runners-up in the state tournament. They competed from the first day they stepped on the field in February until the final out was made in the championship game and are to be commended and congratulated on a stellar season.
Sneads had an impeccable season, finished 21-9, outscored their opponents 247-80 runs, had five shut outs, 13 run-ruled games and two of their losses were 1-0 losses. They will return a solid core group and will have as their goal to make it one step further than they did this year. Congratulations to an awesome Lady Pirates team, coaches, and fans.
