The Marianna Middle School Bullpups were on the big stage last Friday when they went head to head for the championship game against Taylor County. The teams moved up to play at the Marianna High School gymnasium and the elevated atmosphere was motivation enough for the Bullpups to pick up the 44-33 win and claim yet another District Championship.
Marianna edged by the Taylor County Bulldogs 14-12 in the first period with Ryan Peace and Foster Myers leading the way with four points each. Marianna stepped it up defensively in the second quarter, holding Taylor County to seven points while they put up 11 on the board. Foster Myers had the hot hands with three buckets to lead the second period. At the half, Marianna held a 25-19 lead.
The third quarter was a low-scoring affair with Marianna squeezing out a 7-6 lead to make it a 32-25 game with one quarter to go. Damarius Laster led the Bullpups with five points. The final quarter went Marianna’s way 12-8 to secure the win.
Marianna was led on the night by Damarius Laster with 14 points, followed by Foster Myers with 13 points. On board with nine points was Ryan Peace with Ja’cobi Hall posting four while Tavionte Highsmith and Trevor Medlin added two points each.
Following the game, coach Tyler Wilson was all smiles, “This is the first team to win the big bend conference. I am beyond proud of what they have accomplished. They went through so many challenges through this short season. I expect big things from this group in the future.”
Congratulations to the MMS Bullpups and coaching staff on a great season and the District Championship from the publisher and staff of the Jackson County Times.
