Minnie Lewis Walker

Mrs. Minnie Lewis Walker age 61 of Slocomb, Alabama (St. Peter Community) passed away Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Alabama.  The Funeral Service will be 1pm, Saturday, April 13, 2019 at Springfield A. M. E. Church located at 4194 Union Road Marianna, Florida, where the Reverend Hollis  McClendon pastor with Elder Roberto A. Castillo officiating, she will be laid to rest in the church cemetery with McKinnie Funeral Home of Campbellton, Florida directing.

Visitation will held from 4 to 6 pm Friday, April 12th at McKinnie Funeral Home Chapel. 

Minnie Lewis Walker was the born on November 19, 1957, in Marianna, FL.  She was the 4th child of 4 children born to the late Georgia Mae Lewis and the late William Long.

Minnie was never a stranger to anyone. She was a praying woman who loved her family, talking, listening and giving great  advice. She also enjoyed playing her games and living her life. 

 She was preceded in death by her mother, Georgia Mae Lewis; her brother, Otis Lewis and her devoted and loving husband, Luke “LW” Walker.

She leaves to cherish her beautiful memories; Two Daughters: Shanda Walker and Miranda Walker White (Tommy) both of Marianna, FL; One Son: Jeffrey Lewis of Slocomb, AL. Two Sisters: Betty Baker (Tommy) of Marianna, FL and Calona Clemmons (RD) of Campbellton, FL; Eight Grandchildren: Kiara White, La’Dallion White, Tyreese White, Ja’Shonda Mathis, Jashonna Mathis, Jeffrey Lewis, Jr., Jessica Lewis and Trinity Green,; Six Nieces: Tina Baker (Andre), Shantel Barkley, Alexandria Clemmons (Justin), Felica Lewis-Snowden, Stacy Turner and She’ree Mathis; Nine Nephews: Jerhron Clemmons (Mattie), Willie Clemmons (Tangelyn), David Clemmons (Robin), Robert Clemmons (Monica), Steve Clemmons (Demetria), Daniel Clemmons (Tamika), Chris Baker (Michelle), Richard Baker and Marques Barkley; Two Sisters-in-Law: Rayvina Watford (Joseph) of Chipley, FL and Pearlene Jones (Earlie D) of Browntown, FL; Three Brothers-in-Law: Richard Walker (Gladys) of Dothan, AL, Donnell Walker (Bertha) of South FL and Neil Walker of Dothan, AL; Two Step Daughters: Velvelon Walker (Johnny) of Chipley, FL and Valeria Reed (Forrest) of Campbellton, FL; Two Stepsons: Luke E. Walker of Graceville, FL, Lonzell Walker and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and countless other friends.

Ida Mae Carswell

Mrs. Ida Mae Carswell age 93 of Slocomb, AL (St. Peter Community) passed away Sunday February 24, 2019 at the Southeast Health Medical Center in Dothan, AL.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday March 2nd 2019 at Anitoch Missionary Baptist Church located 2325 Singletary Road Slocomb, AL   (Anitoch Community) with the Reverends Pastor Danny Coachman and Eddie Walter Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Phillip Cemetery Slocomb, AL with Mckinnie Funeral Home of Campbellton, FL. directing.

Wake services will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday March 1st 2019 at Mckinnie Funeral Home Chapel located 5304 Bowden Hill Road Campbellton, FL.  

Ida Mae Carswell, affectionately known as “Mama, Mama Ida, Granny, Granny Granny, and Aunt Ida”, was born November 6, 1925, to her late parents Bonnie and Lalar Madison. 

At an early age, Ida accepted Christ and was baptized at the family’s home church, St. Peter Baptist Church. She was a faithful member and enjoyed teaching Sunday school, serving on the Usher Board, and organizing Easter and Christmas Programs.  Later in her life, Ida moved her membership to Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. 

Ida attended elementary school at the Madrid Township School. During this time farm life and helping the family was a priority.  However, Ida recognized the value of having an education and encouraged her entire family to attend school and graduate.

On November 3, 1943, Ida married John Carswell to this union five “wonderful” daughters were born.  John and Ida was a hardworking couple and managed to own their farm located on Sonny Mixon Road.  They taught their daughters many fine qualities:

Ida worked for E. D. Mitchell of Mitchell Funeral Homes in Graceville, Florida.  She was allowed to travel to several resorts while under the employment of the Mitchells.  She also worked for Mrs. Janie in Dothan, Alabama.  Upon retirement, she enjoyed flowering, fishing, gardening, cooking, and sewing.  Ida was very talented and enjoyed baking her famous Sweet Potato Pies and Sweet Bread.  YUM! YUM!! YUM!!! The community, family, and friends enjoyed eating many good meals at MaMa Ida’s table.

She was also preceded in death by her loving husband, John Carswell, and her sisters, Zillie Boone, Mary McKinnie, Ethel Jackson, and brothers, Sam Madison, Celo Madison, Mose Madison, and Ezekiel Madison.  

She leaves a stellar legacy to carry on the Carswell Family Honor in her five daughters – Vera Carswell, Emma Adams, Ruby Smith, Lillie (Earnest) Jett, Alice (Leland) Scott; one adopted daughter, Belinda Brown; and one step daughter, Johnnie Mae Carswell Smith; four siblings:  Warren Madison, Major Madison, Frances Alston, and William Robinson; many loving grands and great grands - Tony Davis, Hope Kistner, Demetria (Zack) Clemons, Nerissa Adams, Roslyn J. Richardson, Earnest Jett, Jr., Alissa Adams, Rhonda Riley, Renee Cannon, Rylicia Cannon,  Rylincia Cannon, Freddie Robert Carswell, David Ramon Carswell, Berthania Inez Carswell, Madeline Carswell Hughes, Delaney Carswell Brown, Trina Cohen Harris, LuLuna Knight, Shaquitta L. Hughes, Roberta Knight, Rose Pryor Aippah, Fredrick Charles Carswell, Oksana Kenon, Renard Mitchell, Donavan Mitchell, Antonio Davis, Rhya Riley, Jahlon Riley, and Grace Quigley and a host of other relatives and friends.

Jamie Jermaine Laster

Mr. Jamie Jermaine Laster, age 39 of Graceville, Florida passed away Saturday, February 9, 2019.

Funeral service will be held at 2:30 p. m. Saturday, February 16th at Mt. Calvary Holiness Church located at 1320 Highway 2, Graceville, Florida 32440 with Pastor James M. Bighem and Elder Karl Sorey officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery with McKinnie Funeral Home of Campbellton directing.

A public viewing will held from 4:00 to 6:00 p. m. Friday, February 15th at McKinnie Funeral Home Chapel. 

Jamie Laster was born May 28th, 1979 in Marianna, Florida to John and Doris Laster. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined the Third United Holiness Church in Graceville, Florida. He enjoyed football, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. 

He leaves many precious memories to be treasured by his Loving Wife: Crystal Gail Laster, One Son: Jamie Laster; One Daughter: Jermesia Laster; His Parents: John and Doris Laster; One Sister: April Carpenter; Two Brothers: Craig and Tares Laster and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and sorrowful friends.

Willie Lee Speights

Mr. Willie Lee Speights age 88 of Marianna, Florida passed away Tuesday, February 5th at Big Ben Hospice, Inc., in Tallahassee, Florida.  

Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a. m. Saturday, February 16th at Antioch African Methodist Episcopal Church at 3701 Hwy 90 West in Marianna, Florida 32446 with Reverend’s Adrian Staley, Carlton Cotton and Freddie Roulac officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery with McKinnie Funeral Home of Campbellton directing.

A public viewing will held from 4:00 to 6:00 p. m. Friday, February 15th at McKinnie Funeral Home Chapel. 

Willie Lee Speights, Jr. was born October 29, 1930 in Jackson County, Florida to the late Willie Lee Speights, Sr. and Henretter Brown. He accepted Christ as his personal savior early in life at Antioch African Methodist Episcopal Church.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 35 years; Ida Mae Speights, his parents, three brothers and four sisters.

He leaves to cherish his memory; his children: Ella Brown of Marianna, Florida, Cynthia Myrick of Montgomery, Alabama, Genette Whych (Dennis) of Petersburg, Virginia, Lucious Helmes of Tampa, Florida, Ira Brown of Ozark, Alabama, Betty Johnson of Marianna, Florida and Angela (Bernard) Owens of Augusta, Georgia; his siblings: Hermon Speights (Margianna) and Louise McKinnon both of Saint Petersburg, Florida, Larry Speights, Angie Garrett and Beatrice Phillips (Lewis) of Atlanta, Georgia; 18 Grandchildren, 14 Great-Grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
