Van Goodsell Roark

Van Goodsell Roark, 61 of Cottondale, passed from this life on November 17, 2018 at his residence.

Van was born on December 5, 1956 in Lenoir, North Carolina to Emmett and Doris Stephens Roark. He was an Electrician by trade and attained his Bachelor’s degree from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. His life was spent helping others, taking mission trips to Africa, and working with Samaritan’s Purse after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. He loved spending time outdoors skiing, deep sea fishing, and diving. He was a member of Alford Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father: Emmett Goodsell Roark; sister: Lynda Stephenson.

He is survived by his mother, Doris Roark of Cottondale, Florida; brother: Steve Roark and wife Charlotte of Cottondale, Florida; sister: Jane Gage and husband John of Smithville, Virginia; nephews: Doug Ware of Tallahassee, Florida, Mark Streb and wife Chris of California, David Roark and wife Colleen of Bonifay, Florida, Patrick Roark and wife Elizabeth of Chipley, Florida; nieces: Krista Rankin and husband Brent of Tallahassee, Florida, Amy Herring and husband Matt of Holly Springs, North Carolina. 

A memorial service will be held in his honor 11A.M. Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Alford Baptist Church in Alford, Florida with Rev. Bob Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Obert Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made in his honor to Samaritan’s Purse or the Alford Baptist Church Building Fund.

Raymond “Ray” D. Herring

Raymond “Ray” D. Herring, age 72 of Chipley, passed from this life on November 22, 2018.

Ray was born on December 24, 1946 in Ocala, Florida, to James and Betty Herring, Jr. Ray’s family moved to Chipley in 1962.  A graduate of Vernon High School, Class of 1965, Ray went on to serve his country in the United States Army and National Guard. He was recruited and played for the Army Baseball team; he was also an expert marksman and sharpshooter. Ray worked for the Washington County School Board Maintenance Department, retiring in 2008.  Ray’s life centered on family, sports, fishing, and hunting; he was known as “Coach” to many.

He was preceded in death by his parents: James and Betty Herring, Jr. and beloved son, Shannon Ray Herring.

He is survived by his daughter, Laurie Ann Herring and husband, Brian Kellett of Panama City, Florida; son, J.R. Davis and wife, Holly, of Hawaii, daughter, Brenda Davis of Georgia; three brothers: Roy Herring and wife, Jackie; Donald Herring; James “Jim” Herring and wife Kathy of Chipley, Florida; grandchildren: Warren Gainey; Aidan and Zane Herring-Shook, Christin and Brandon Kellett; Tristan, Nathan, and Cody Herring, Ava and Ethan “EJ” Davis.

Graveside funeral service will be held 4 p.m., Saturday, December 1, 2018, at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Chipley, Florida, with Military Honors. 

The family will receive friends for visitation from 2-4 p.m., Saturday, December 1, 2018, at Grace and Glory Church in Chipley, Florida. Arrangements under the direction of Obert Funeral Home.

Pallbearers asked to serve are Johnny Johnson, Stacey Hartzog, Joey Hartzog, Scott Harris, Matt Harris, Shawn Gainey, and Johnny Gainey.

Mary Lois Obert

Mary Lois Obert, age 89 of Sneads, went home to be with the Lord on November 19, 2018 at her residence.

Mrs. Mary was born on July 24, 1929 in Moultrie, Georgia to John and Julia Arrington Thompson. She was a member of New Beginnings Worship Center in Grand Ridge, Florida. 

She was preceded in death by her parents: John and Julia Thompson; husbands: Rev. Charlie Glenn Miller, Rev. Houston Obert; brothers: Horace Thompson, Ed Thompson.

She is survived by her three daughters: Glenda Goins and husband William of Durham, North Carolina, Gail Elizabeth Parsons of Sneads, Florida, Charlotte Jackson and husband Tommy of Grand Ridge, Florida; bonus children: W A Obert, Roland Obert and wife Martha, Charles Obert and wife Hazel, Wilma Hamilton and husband Earl, Marilyn Obert Branch, Mary Powell and husband Buddy; ten grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held 3P.M. Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at New Beginnings Worship Center in Grand Ridge, Florida with Rev. Mike Daniels and Rev. Robert Simmons officiating. Interment will follow in Shady Grove Cemetery, Grand Ridge, Florida with Obert Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida directing.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Tommy J. Williams

Tommy J. Williams, age 68 of Marianna, went home to be with the Lord on Ocotber 2, 2018 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Alabama. 

Tommy was born on July 8, 1950 in Jackson County, Florida to Wilber and Hazel Coley Williams. He was a lifelong resident of Jackson County and worked as a Truck Driver. 

He was preceded in death by his parents: Wilber and Hazel Williams; brother: Eugene Williams; sister: Verna Lou Mathis.

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 30 years, Freta Williams of Marianna, FL; son: Tommy Williams II and wife Lisa of Cottondale, FL; two daughters: Shannon Tharp and husband Doug of Cypress, FL, Sirena Liles and husband Roger of Marianna, FL; stepdaughter: Jazmine Knight and husband Billy of Sneads, FL; two brothers: Carl Williams and wife Violet of Altha, FL, Edward Williams and wife Janet; twelve grandchildren; six great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 11A.M. Friday, October 5, 2018 at Altha Church of God in Altha, Florida with Rev. Allan Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in Sims Cemetery in Marianna, Florida. Obert Funeral Home of Chipley, Florida directing. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
