Jackson County Sheriff’s Office relocating due to damage Featured

Jackson County Sheriff’s Office relocating due to damage

In a called meeting of the Jackson County Commissioners Monday, Sheriff Lou Roberts addressed the commission about a lease for the Sheriff’s Department to enter into for his department to occupy the south portion of the Dozier School property more commonly known as “JJOT”.  This would allow his department to begin capital improvements to the land and building.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s office is housed in temporarily in portable buildings due to damage from Hurricane Michael.

In an interview with Roberts following the meeting, he elaborated on his plans, “As everyone has seen, the sheriff’s office received quite extensive damage as did a lot of the structures in town and in the county.  As far as the sheriff’s office, we lost a good portion of the roof in a couple of different places which compromised the integrity of the inside of the building, it was wet.  We were able to get it stabilized by putting tarps and patches over it and got it dried out. With that said, part of it is inhabitable. Some of what we’ve had to move out is our communications room, our patrol division, our investigative section and some of the rooms are still okay, like the front.  But that is only the front portion of the building and a small area. I spoke with the governor and asked him if there was any possibility if we could have a building around on the back side known as the JJOT building.”

Roberts said the governor said after some calls that was a possibility. Roberts says, “So we are looking at moving from where we are to transitioning there and for how long we will be there, I do not know.”

Roberts feels this is a good location, easy access to the jail and away from a high traffic road where they are presently located on Highway 90.
