Young Eagles take Flight at Marianna Fly In

Many children enjoyed their first taste of small aircraft and flights at the Marianna Municipal Airport Fly on May 17, 2014. Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) pilots traveled from around the region to the event in hopes of encouraging the next generation in the love of aviation. It was a great experience for the youth to feel, touch and take to the skies.

A flight pre-brief was held in an adjacent room where roll call and the flight plan were revealed before introducing the aircraft. The pilots shared equipment details as they did a preflight check and introduced the children to some of the planes mechanical parts and there use.

Camille and Carlos Warren, children of this author, took to the skies with pilot, Danny Cherry, President of “The WireGrass Chapter” from Dothan Alabama. They boarded the Piper Cherokee Cruiser 4 seater and set out for a thrilling ride to Lake Seminole. Camille was allowed to take the controls for a few minutes during the 30 minute trip.

Once back on the ground, the excited kids received their logbook and a certificate both signed by their pilot. Camille, 10 years old, said “my favorite part was seeing the lake below” and also explained how she enjoyed talking to the pilot during the flight. She explained that “the pilot really loves to fly.” Carlos, 9 years old, said “my favorite part was seeing the houses as we flew over, they looked so small.”

Both Camille and Carlos are now planning their next adventure in a plane or a simulator. What a fabulous experience to have on such a beautiful day in Jackson County Florida!

The Wiregrass Chapter of the EAA is one of the most active in Southeast Alabama with a primary focus on the Young Eagles program. You can learn more about this chapter at http://www.1358.eaachapter.org/
