Scott Wiggins – whatever you need, he has your back

Scott Wiggins – whatever you need, he has your back

Scott Wiggins has become a fixture at Marianna High School, sporting events, and the softball fields all over the panhandle. Some coaches say Wiggins has forgotten more about girls’ softball than many coaches ever knew.  And from his winning records while coaching at Marianna Middle and Marianna High School are pretty much proof in the pudding that that would be a correct statement.

Scott began coaching at Marianna Middle School, coached there for three years with a 34-2 record before moving to Marianna High School where he has been a fixture for the last eight years. He has won four district championships in the previous seven years and has recorded a winning record year after year. His teams have made the Sweet 16 in three of the four years of post season play.  There are no ‘down’ or ‘rebuilding’ years for Wiggins. He takes very little credit, always giving credit to his team, and the level of talent he has. In eight years, the girls on the field have been given all the credit by Wiggins.

This past year, Wiggins job changed at Marianna High School.  He moved out of the classroom and took a general maintenance position.  He took that job with as much heart and energy as he has his softball teams over the last 11 years. The fields are improved, and the faculty, staff and coaches have definitely taken note of the change. The new job duties haven’t affected his team’s performance on the softball field, having just completed a tournament where they outscored their opponents 44-4.

Athletic Director and head football coach John Donaldson has nothing but praise for the job Wiggins does and as a friend, “Scott is a huge part of MHS.  We are lucky to have guy with so much experience involved with our softball program. I will put our program up against anybody’s and he has been the major catalyst in its growth. Scott pays great attention to detail and consistently volunteers for tasks outside of his duty to help our school.  He is a great friend and ambassador to MHS athletics.”

Principal Hunter Nolen seconds those sentiments, “Scott is a great guy, he will do anything asked of him and many times does it before being asked. His softball program is one of the best in the panhandle and is competitive every year, the girls work really hard for him. That’s how much they think of him. He drives a bus when we need him to, he does whatever we need him to do and never refuses anything asked of him.  He supports all the programs here at MHS and we are very appreciative of him. MHS is very fortunate to have him on board.”

Scott is married to Tori Reagan Wiggins.  Tori can also be seen at sporting events, most especially softball games throughout the season.
