The new Sally Beauty Supply store in Marianna could not be smaller, but the company could not be bigger, practically. Actually, it’s amazing what they’ve done with the 2,000 sq. ft. lease space at the 4871 Westside Plaza strip mall (Dollar Tree, San Marcos Mexican Restaurant) on the south side of the Wal-Mart Supercenter parking lot. There are thousands of products in there for salons and individuals. The TIMES caught up with the store’s first manager Friday while she was ordering her fajitas for lunch at San Marcos next door.
Marianna girl (MHS Class of 1998) Jamie Smith was working on the other side of the new store as an assistant manager of the Dollar Tree last month when she noticed a sign on the vacant unit. She applied for the job of manager and opened Sally Beauty Supply-Marianna on Monday, Sept. 15. SBS joins a long and growing list of companies that have chosen to open outlets in Marianna, save their customers the drive to Dothan or Panama City and start up new accounts as well. It is estimated that more than 25,000 people live within a five-mile radius of the Marianna city limits.
Jamie’s choice may have been prescient. Dollar Tree is merging with Family Dollar but Sally Beauty Supply gets family dollars from all over the world. With 16,500 employees, the company has more than 4,000 stores in 11 countries, including locations all over Europe. Yet the business had humble beginnings as most US success stories do: It began with one little corner shop in downtown New Orleans in 1964 named for the daughter of the owner, Sally Josephine Deluca. Today, Sally Beauty Holdings (NYSE: $27.90 on 9/22) reported sales for the year 2013 at more than $3.6 billion. It is the largest retailer of professional beauty supplies in the world, the company says. It’s headquartered in the glorious American South in Denton, Texas; the CEO is Gary Winterhalter.
“Come on in and check out our large selection of beauty products,” Jamie said, “including skin care, hair, make up, scissors, clippers and a whole lot more.” Jamie is herself a Chipola College-trained cosmetologist, which may have helped her on that application. She did hair for a while at the former Magnolia Salon in Marianna. She explains that the college is responsible for the large number of salons and cosmetologists in the area. “While Sally Beauty Supply is just what the name says, a supplier,” she added, “we are open to the public; individuals may purchase a membership card for $5 and that is good for the entire year.”
Manager Jamie Smith has four part-time employees, she said. The Marianna store is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 11-6. For more info, call the shop at 850-482-2043.
